The new inbox - fAQ’s

answers to the most frequently asked questions about the new inbox

Q: What comes with my order? Is this system complete and ready to go?

A: With your New Inbox, you will receive a plastic bin with a plastic side pouch, along with 43 folders (labeled 1-31 for the days of the month, and January-December for the months of the year). Just after you open your package, The New Inbox will be ready to use! Just grab some paper to process and start putting The New Inbox to work...

Q: Why do I want this plastic bin on top of my desk with a bunch of files in it?

A: The New Inbox gives you a place to put the the paperwork that isn’t going to get processed today; this includes the brochures, tickets, mail, bills, cards, notes, etc. Whether it’s tomorrow, or next week, or three months from now, The New Inbox will hold it for you, and deliver it back to you right when you need it. that don't need to be dealt with for days (weeks, or months).

Q: I have a PDA and it synchs with my computer. Shouldn’t I just use that for my reminders?

A: The New Inbox is  a complimentary system to your PDA / computer program for managing to-do's and reminders. The main difference of the New Inbox, however, is that it takes the physical paper out of your way until the day you need it. Clearing out the clutter on your desk allows you to work on what’s in front of you. Additionally, because the folders can be quickly accessed, processing the paperwork for a later date takes only a few seconds (the time it takes to decide when you want the specific paper to come back).

Q: How will I remember to use the New Inbox every day? If I miss a day, won’t I miss out on my to-do’s?

A: A trick I’ve suggested to my clients: Put your car keys into your New Inbox for tomorrow. This will ensure that you will never leave without first checking what you’ve assigned to yourself. Additionally, place the New Inbox close to your work area (mine is right next to my computer). This way, you’ll be able to quickly process any document, and get it out of sight.

Q: What if I’m going on a trip? How should I take care of the contents in the folders for the days I’m gone?

A: I recommend going through the days you are going to be gone on the day before you leave for your trip. This will give you a chance to bump some of the items to a date after you return, and also allow you to take action on other items. Additionally, I recommend taking two folders with you on your trip: The first will contain all of the items that you want to process on your trip (those not dealt with before you leave, and that can’t wait until you return) and a second folder as a “holding bin” for documents that you will put into your New Inbox when you return.
